What’s your favourite? Blogging, Vlogging, or Podcasting? I know there are a million and one different platforms out there, but they all boil down to one of these three in some way, shape, or form. My favourite, you’ll be utterly shocked to discover, is blogging. I’m all about the written word despite the odd foray into vlogging or Periscope. And I don’t just prefer to share my message through writing; I would choose reading over watching a video, or listening to a podcast any day of the week, and twice on Tuesdays! (extra marks if you immediately thought of Sam from A Few Good Men…) But that’s just me. I have friends who prefer video, and others who can’t get enough of podcasts. Each to their own.
But here’s the thing: when you get to the nub of it, there really isn’t any difference between blogging, vlogging, and podcasting, bar the method of delivery. When it comes to creating a blog post, a vlog post, or a podcast episode, the principles are the same. I talk about POSTS when it comes to creating and building a great blog, but the same principles apply for video and podcasting. You need to understand your people and write for/speak to them; you need a clear objective, both for your blog, and each individual blog post, vlog post, or podcast episode; you need a Story Cupboard full of great ideas to write or talk about; you need to be true to yourself so that your audience gets to know, like, and trust you, rather than a version of you; and you need to share your blog posts, vlog posts, or podcast episodes far and wide, to reach the people who need what you sell.
I’m a firm believer in helping the people who need what you sell to get to know, like, and trust you. In helping them to choose you. And I think that you should use whichever medium feels the most natural and easy, because then you’re more likely to communicate with your audience regularly. And whether you choose to blog, vlog, or podcast, I have all the solutions you need to help you kickstart, ramp-up, and maintain your blogging, vlogging, and podcasting habit!
