When you work on your own, it’s easy to get yourself tied up in knots when it comes to blogging. You start off with ‘what should I blog about today?’, and via ‘that’s a rubbish idea’, ‘who’s going to want to read that’, ‘nobody’s going to read it anyway’, and ‘who am I to think I have anything interesting to say’, you give it up as a bad job and don’t publish anything. How do I know this? Because I’ve been there, that’s how! These have been my exact thoughts during several periods of my blogging career. So how do you untangle the knot and get into the habit of blogging on a regular basis? My solution is to talk about it.

If you’re struggling to know what to write about, and you worry that what you write isn’t publishable, get yourself a blogging buddy or a coach and start talking. Talk about the customers you want to attract, and what makes them tick. Talk about what’s happening in their lives and why they need what you sell. Talk about what you sell and how that helps people. Find the emotional connection. And within all that talking you’ll find a myriad of topics you can write about. Your blogging buddy or coach can help by taking notes and reviewing them with you.

Once you get everything out of your head, things become a lot clearer and you can start to have confidence in your topic selection. You get a sense-check from another human being, and it can boost your confidence when it comes to clicking ‘Publish’.

I’ve seen this in practice over the last 24 hours. Yesterday afternoon I spent an hour with a business owner, exploring the kind of people she wants to attract to her business, and how she could connect with them on an emotional level. By talking it through we identified lots of things she could blog about that would help her to connect with her ideal customer, and show them how she can help them. She hadn’t blogged for weeks, but this morning she sent me a brand new blog post to review. It was brilliant! There was nothing I could add to make it any better. So she’s now published it.

By talking it through, that particular business owner went from writing nothing, to writing a brilliant blog post that speaks to the hearts of the people she wants to help. Talking works!
